Angelina Jolie, a name synonymous with Hollywood glamour, is much more than an award-winning actress and director. Over the years, Jolie has evolved into one of the most prominent humanitarian figures of our time. Her charitable efforts, particularly those focused on refugees, children’s rights, and global health, have made a profound impact on millions of lives around the world. This article explores some of her most significant charity projects and the enduring legacy she continues to build.
Champion for Refugees
Angelina Jolie’s journey as a humanitarian began in 2001 when she was named a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). During her initial missions, Jolie visited refugee camps in war-torn regions such as Sierra Leone, Cambodia, and Pakistan. These trips deeply affected her and marked the beginning of her commitment to advocating for displaced people.
In 2012, Jolie was appointed as a Special Envoy to the UNHCR, a role that allows her to focus on major crises that result in mass displacements. Her work has taken her to over 60 countries, where she has met with refugees and displaced persons to raise awareness and push for international support. Jolie’s advocacy was instrumental in establishing educational facilities in refugee camps and lobbying for improved legal protection for asylum seekers.
The Jolie-Pitt Foundation
In 2006, Jolie, along with her then-partner Brad Pitt, established the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. This charitable organization has supported numerous causes, including disaster relief, wildlife conservation, and development projects in underprivileged regions. One of the foundation’s early contributions was a $1 million donation to aid the recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina. The foundation has also supported the rebuilding of New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, contributing to the construction of affordable, sustainable homes for displaced residents.
The Jolie-Pitt Foundation has funded initiatives in Cambodia, where Jolie’s first adopted child, Maddox, was born. In 2003, she created the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation to promote rural development and environmental conservation in the country. The foundation works on projects ranging from health care and education to infrastructure development and conservation of endangered species like the Asian elephant.
Education and Children's Rights
Jolie’s commitment to children’s rights is evident in her extensive work to support education and health care for vulnerable children around the globe. In 2013, she launched the Malala Fund alongside Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, aiming to ensure that every girl has access to 12 years of free, safe, and quality education. The fund has helped girls in countries like Afghanistan and Syria, where education opportunities are often limited by conflict and cultural barriers.
Additionally, Jolie is the founder of the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which provides educational opportunities to children affected by war and natural disasters. This initiative has raised millions of dollars to fund programs in Iraq, Haiti, and Sudan, ensuring that displaced and marginalized children have access to schooling.
Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict
One of Jolie’s most notable humanitarian efforts is her work to combat sexual violence in conflict zones. In 2012, she co-founded the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) with former UK Foreign Secretary William Hague. The initiative aims to end the use of rape as a weapon of war and provide justice and support to survivors of sexual violence in conflict areas.
Jolie’s dedication to this cause led to the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in 2014, where representatives from over 100 countries gathered to discuss how to tackle this issue. The summit resulted in a set of international guidelines to document and investigate sexual violence in conflicts, a significant step towards accountability and justice for survivors.
Angelina Jolie’s philanthropic work is as diverse and impactful as her illustrious film career. Her commitment to humanitarian causes, particularly those affecting refugees, children, and victims of conflict, has earned her international recognition and respect. Through her foundation, partnerships, and direct action, Jolie has used her platform to amplify the voices of the marginalized and to make tangible changes in the world.
While she continues to captivate audiences on screen, it is her off-screen efforts that truly define her legacy. Angelina Jolie’s humanitarian work serves as a powerful reminder that celebrity can be a force for good, driving change and bringing attention to the world’s most pressing issues. Her unwavering dedication to making a difference ensures that her impact will be felt for generations to come.
